WHY CHOCTAW MATTERS

The Choctaw Nation is one of the original Five Civilized Tribes and was known for its complex society, agricultural strength and deep spiritual traditions. Originally inhabiting what is now Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana, the Choctaw were mound builders, diplomats and warriors. After the Indian Removal Act, many Choctaw were displaced to present-day Oklahoma, but their traditions and bloodlines remain strong among Black American communities across the Deep South. The Choctaw were also among the first tribes to adopt written constitutions and formal government, influencing Indigenous and American governance alike.
