The Chickasaw Nation is known as the “Spartans of the Southeast” — fierce defenders of their land, expert warriors and sophisticated negotiators. Prior to removal, they lived across what is now Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee, and were one of the most economically independent and militarily strategic tribes. Many Black Americans, particularly in Mississippi, Kentucky and Oklahoma, carry Chickasaw lineage, though much of that history was suppressed through reclassification and colonial disruption.
